On Saturday evening PORTRAIT OF A LONE FARMER by Tom Akinleminu won the Award for Best Documentary at the African Movie Academy Awards. The AMAAs are the most important and prestigious film-world event in Africa: the prizes are awarded to honour and foster outstanding achievements in the African film industry and to contribute to uniting the African continent through art and culture.
In addition to the prize for PORTRAIT OF A LONE FARMER, the Malian production HAMOU-BEYA, SAND FISHERS by Andrey Samoute Diarra also won an Award for Best Documentary.
Teboho Edkins has been awarded the main prize by the International Jury at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival for his film GANGSTER BACKSTAGE. This award comes with 4.000€ prize money.
The jury statement on the film:
“Alternately intensive and tentatively cautious, this film, which is not constrained by genre considerations, explores the complex reality of a life on the edge, in which direct anticipation of death is part of everyday reality. As an examination of private stories, switching between centre stage and what is happening behind the scenes, this sensitively crafted work is an outstanding filmic portrait”.
Yesterday David Dietl won the New Faces Award, presented by the magazine “Bunte”, for his directorial debut “König von Deutschland” (“King of Germany”).
The New Faces Award for young filmmakers has been awarded in the run-up to the German Film Prize since 1998.
