Michael Ballhaus painted with light and danced with the camera. His artistry set us dreaming in the cinema.
In creating images as a cinematographer, he encountered the directors and actors he worked with on an equal footing, quite literally “meeting them eye-to-eye” (to use the German expression); he looked into people’s eyes, and what he saw there gazed at us from the screen, in the cinema.
Anyone who knew him personally knows that Michael Ballhaus was as wonderful as a person as he was as an artist. He symbolised dedication, sincerity and above all humility, towards the work, the craft, towards people.
Dear Michael Ballhaus, many thanks for all that you have given us.
