The Ser\u00adi\u00adal Eyes par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants<\/a> of 2018\/\u200b19 inter\u00adviewed the head writer Jana Bur\u00adbach<\/a> and staff writer Niko Schulz-Dorn\u00adburg<\/a> (SE 2014\/\u200b15) about the mak\u00ading of the show.<\/p>\n

Q: How did DIE HEILAND come about?<\/p>\n

Jana: Die Hei\u00adland is based on the auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal book by a Berlin-based and born-blind lawyer, Pamela Pab\u00adst. The book was pub\u00adlished about 6 years ago. Vio\u00adla J\u00e4ger from Olgafilm optioned the film rights to that book and then start\u00aded to devel\u00adop it. [The adap\u00adta\u00adtion] was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly meant to be a TV-movie; then the RBB, the Berlin-Bran\u00adden\u00adburg broad\u00adcast\u00ader, decid\u00aded to turn it into a long-run\u00adning series. I took over from exist\u00ading mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal by Silke Zertz. By the time Vio\u00adla approached me, three scripts and three expos\u00ades were ready, but they didn\u2019t get through to the final approval by the ARD com\u00admis\u00adsion\u00ading board. That was when I took over with Niko and the author Christoph Cal\u00adlen\u00adberg. It was the sum\u00admer of 2016, I think.<\/p>\n

Q: You said that it was based on a book by a real lawyer. She also had an assis\u00adtant in real life? Were they both part of the cre\u00adative process?<\/p>\n

Jana: Yes, we all met Pamela Pab\u00adst. I actu\u00adal\u00adly end\u00aded up spend\u00ading a lot of time with her, because for me [this project] rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar chal\u00adlenge. As a see\u00ading per\u00adson, I think it is impos\u00adsi\u00adble to real\u00adly get [what it means to be blind], but I could start to empathize and could put that into the sto\u00adry and try to under\u00adstand what it might mean for her assis\u00adtant as well. We actu\u00adal\u00adly went togeth\u00ader on a jour\u00adney to Bochum, where she had a court case. I accom\u00adpa\u00adnied her all day \u2013 on the train, in the hotel, the next morn\u00ading, while eat\u00ading\u2026 it was through all these that I got first-hand expe\u00adri\u00adence.<\/p>\n

Niko: You became her assis\u00adtant!<\/p>\n

Jana: Yes, and then the blind\u00adness start\u00aded com\u00ading to life in the scripts. Of course, I also con\u00adsult\u00aded her for legal stuff and I end\u00aded up read\u00ading to her all the scripts. She was like \u201cJana, it\u2019s real\u00adly not nec\u00ades\u00adsary, the com\u00adput\u00ader can read me the script.\u201d I thought this would have been nicer, so I con\u00adtin\u00adued. At the end, she asked me to keep on com\u00ading. I thought, \u201cWhat have I got myself into?\u201d [laughs], but actu\u00adal\u00adly we became friends.<\/p>\n
