It was about a self-help group for drug addicts. At the same time, the Film Board had set up a schol\u00adar\u00adship pro\u00adgram, under which a decent amount of mon\u00adey was made avail\u00adable to vis\u00adit and observe famous direc\u00adtors or pro\u00adduc\u00aders abroad at work. To qual\u00adi\u00adfy for the schol\u00adar\u00adship, all you need\u00aded was a cred\u00adi\u00adble invi\u00adta\u00adtion from such a per\u00adson. Because I didn\u2019t just want to be a reporter all my life, but also want\u00aded to try my hand at the dra\u00admat\u00adic arts, I was inter\u00adest\u00aded, and some\u00adone gave me some con\u00adtacts in Hol\u00adly\u00adwood \u2013 to CBS, George Lucas and Robert Alt\u00adman. So, dur\u00ading my trip to the drug addicts\u2019 clin\u00adic, my aim was also get an invi\u00adta\u00adtion to be a so-called \u201cguest observ\u00ader\u201d. At CBS, it was quite impres\u00adsive but rather anony\u00admous. I didn\u2019t like it. I left out George Lucas imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly, because he had just left the roman\u00adtic streets of AMERICAN GRAFFITI for STAR WARS. That was too tech\u00adni\u00adcal for me \u2013 but I did go to Robert Altman\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back then he had a lit\u00adtle pro\u00adduc\u00adtion build\u00ading in West\u00adwood which was beau\u00adti\u00adful by Euro\u00adpean stan\u00addards with smells from the kitchen, nar\u00adrow stairs and var\u00adi\u00adous pro\u00adduc\u00adtion nois\u00ades behind every door. This relieved me of any fears I might have had, and so with good inten\u00adtions I approached the then very fat Robert Alt\u00adman who was squeezed in behind a large desk. His \u201cWhat can I do for you?\u201d was the only mea\u00adgre, but quite friend\u00adly open\u00ading for my lit\u00adtle talk about my wish\u00ades, dreams, self-assess\u00adment, enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm for Alt\u00adman, and so on. The man looked me up and down, grum\u00adbled half coher\u00adent\u00adly, half impa\u00adtient\u00adly, and while talk\u00ading I was try\u00ading to think of what else I could say to con\u00advince him to allow me to be a future guest observ\u00ader. He didn\u2019t reveal any\u00adthing of him\u00adself. At some point, I could think of noth\u00ading else, and that was it. Now it was up to him to decide. But some\u00adhow it didn\u2019t seem like enough or con\u00advinc\u00ading enough. I searched my mind for my ace card, and there it was. There was one thing I had com\u00adplete\u00adly for\u00adgot\u00adten: \u201cBy the way, it won\u2019t cost you a cent,\u201d I sud\u00adden\u00adly said and was proud that I didn\u2019t say \u201cpen\u00adny\u201d. \u201cIt\u2019s all paid for by a Ger\u00adman fund, and if that\u2019s not enough, I\u2019ll bring my own mon\u00adey too.\u201d I looked up to see Altman\u2019s reac\u00adtion. Should I stand up already for a hand\u00adshake? Alt\u00adman looked me right in the eye, as his eyes got small\u00ader and small\u00ader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAre you say\u00ading, I can\u2019t afford you? Are you telling me, I can\u2019t pay you?\u201d In slow motion \u2013 like the moment before a head-on col\u00adli\u00adsion with anoth\u00ader car \u2013 thoughts, bet\u00adter said reflex\u00ades, raced through my mind. Was I at the wrong par\u00adty? Was this clever, cre\u00adative man with the Euro\u00adpean-style pro\u00adduc\u00adtion build\u00ading the same man I just sat down in front of? Did I do some\u00adthing wrong, some\u00adthing ter\u00adri\u00adble? When? Where?
