In a state\u00adment issued fol\u00adlow\u00ading a con\u00adfer\u00adence under the title \u201cThe Arts and Migration(s): Reflec\u00adtions and Respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties\u201d, which was held in Valletta\/\u200bMalta upon invi\u00adta\u00adtion of the Arts Coun\u00adcil Mal\u00adta from 27 to 29 Octo\u00adber 2025, the Euro\u00adpean Alliance of Acad\u00ade\u00admies<\/a> express\u00ades its deep con\u00adcern about the increas\u00ading trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of Europe into a fortress where migrants in their strug\u00adgle for a safer life risk rejec\u00adtion, hos\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adty, and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Euro\u00adpean Alliance of Acad\u00ade\u00admies, which was found\u00aded five years ago to pro\u00admote and defend artis\u00adtic free\u00addom and free\u00addom of speech, urges the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty to recog\u00adnise the rights of peo\u00adple leav\u00ading their coun\u00adtries, and to con\u00adsid\u00ader migra\u00adtion essen\u00adtial to our com\u00admon his\u00adto\u00adry, vital to the sto\u00adry of humankind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mil\u00adlions of peo\u00adple are forced to leave their coun\u00adtries because of eco\u00adnom\u00adic inequal\u00adi\u00adty, war, per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adtion, flood and drought. There is no migra\u00adtion cri\u00adsis as we hear too often, but there is a polit\u00adi\u00adcal cri\u00adsis where more and more coun\u00adtries blame migra\u00adtion for the prob\u00adlems they face. There is a cli\u00admate cri\u00adsis and there is a moral cri\u00adsis as we are liv\u00ading in a world in which wel\u00adcome and hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty must be re-intro\u00adduced: We have to re-find our civil\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art and cul\u00adture rely upon the free cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion of peo\u00adple and ideas \u2013 restric\u00adtion to nation\u00adal bound\u00adaries makes us nar\u00adrow-mind\u00aded and one-sided. Instead of clos\u00ading our eyes to increas\u00ading prej\u00adu\u00addice and mis\u00adin\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion we must open our win\u00addows and doors. Indeed, we must recog\u00adnise migrants for all they bring to our soci\u00adeties \u2013 their life sto\u00adries, knowl\u00adedge and cul\u00adture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
