A Shape Of An Empire — A California Trilogy

Whenever I reflect on the situation of today’s world, whether it concern the society, ecology, economy, culture or civilization, I always end up confronting the moral question: what action is acceptable or responsible? Humans believe that their will is free. This illusionary perception of freedom stems from our consciousness, experience and our indifference to prior natural causes. They are sensible of their desire and unaware of the causes by which their desires are determined. Hence this film piece illustrates the human behavior with ourselves and the relationship to nature in 3 chapters, in the living and life-giving organism of California.

Elisa

The film portrays the claustrophobic and extremely painful relationship between nine year old Elisa and her mother. At night, Elisa scratches herself, this drives her mother insane. However rather than to see this as a sign that something is wrong, she demands Elisa to stop. Does the mother's anger provoke further scratching, or is it the other way around? It is impossible to tell. Suffering from the incredible pressure, Elisa finds it impossible to predict the action of her dominant mother. She just feels she should be different than she is. The little family begins to break apart and Elisa's mother awkward attempts to keep their life in order, but it has gotten out of control. An undefinable force is splitting them apart.

Medea — “Werden wir frei sein?”, fragte sie plötzlich.

The movie interweaves rehearsals for a dance piece, "Medea", with the troubles of a young Georgian refugee on the run from German immigration authorities, Kafka text fragments, and Cherubini's Medea opera, into a story of liberty, egality and the denial of it to those who have been stigmatized as "strangers" from the time of old Corinth until the present.
