A tale of two islands

On March 31st 2011 the small island Mayotte in the Indian Ocean officially received the status as the 101st department of France. Since that day, a new external frontier of the European Union separates Mayotte from Anjouan, its African sister-island belonging to the Union of the Comoros. Both Islands were for a long time part of the French colonial empire. In the wake of the African decolonization movement of the 1970s, referendums were organized on both islands. While Anjouan declared its independence, the overwhelming majority in Mayotte voted for remaining a part of France. Since then, Mayotte profits from French investments into its infrastructure, education and health system, while Anjouan looks back onto a history full of coups d’états, political turmoil and economic depression. Many Anjouanais thus try to clandestinely reach their neighbour-island in nighttime crossings with small motorboats, so called Kwassas. The 2-channel-videoinstallation “A Tale of Two Islands” describes the postcolonial spaces that originate from this complex political situation. Documentary encounters filmed in the ports of the capitals of both islands unfold in precisely composed tableaux.

This school takes on every pupil, no matterwhat race, religion or handicap. David wants to become an astronomer, plays the piano as a little Mozart and invents daily jokes. Whenever he needs some concentrated time he turns off his hearing aid. His brother Jakob, who has the Down Syndrome cheers up the whole class. He would like to become a farmer. Anita, a girl fled from Kosove must take care of her younger brother so that she barely has time to practice running like a top model. Lucas who has problems in reading is expert in auto mechanics and knows how to tune a car. They all learn together, aged mixed, solve their problems in class councils and teach each other. After grade 4, at the age of 10, the inclusive elementary school ends and these children are separated and send to different schools. A decision for life. For 3years the director Hella Wenders followed the ups and downs of their daily life.

A lost way

This film is adapted according to the real people and real events, that is, Zhao Zhifei Case 2011 (see Wikipedia). The hero was beaten and detained as a “petitioner”, when was traveling in Beijing alone. “Petition” and “interception” are the social focus. In China, some people would leave their hometown for Beijing to request an audience with the higher government authorities to voice their grievances and appeal for help. In the eyes of some local governments, however, these people disrupt social stability. And every effort is taken to stop them from going to Beijing. At present, “stability trumps everything”, the social conflicts became more and more acute. According to sources, interceptors are one hundred thousand person-times in provinces every year at least. During the Beijing Olympics, the number leaped to 30,000 in some provinces. So some security companies were emerged. Nominally they do security guard. Essentially, they make a lucrative deal with the local. They are profiteering through that arbitrarily arrested and detained people and sent them home. Based on such background, this film from a typical and absurd event to start narrative, presenting as a black and tragic social reality , by strong documentary feeling and gray-toned in storytelling. Driven by interests and power, abuses of violence make society and people alienate. Whether perpetrators or victims, all go to an unpredictable no-return road under the alienation.

The Marathon
