My Mother’s Tears — Berlin Buenos Aires

Alex, (27), returns to Argentina to visit his dying father. There, his mother and old family friends join him and memories begin to surface from his childhood in the early 80’s. Alex and his parents flee Argentina during the military takeover in the late 70’s. They finally settle in West Berlin, where they live in an industrial loft, together with an eclectic group of people who soon become important figures in Alex’s life. As Alex turns seven years old, he discovers that he has a strange and special gift. Alex has telekinetic powers, which help him adapt to his new life and surroundings. While Alex experiences the growing pains of falling in love for the first time and troubles at school, his parents are trying to come to terms with the frustrations of living in exile. They are constantly worrying about money and have difficulties adapting to the way of life in Germany. Alex’s mother, Lizzie, sees Germany as a chance to raise her child in freedom. She learns the language, embraces the new culture, and quickly finds work. Carlos, Alex’s father, suffers from the burdens of life in exile and longs to return to Argentina. Everyday, he feels more rejected and misunderstood. As time goes on, Alex’s parents find it more and more difficult to relate to one another, with Alex caught in the middle. In a desperate attempt to save his parents love, he uses his special gift.

C.O.B. — Civilians On The Battlefield

„C.O.B“ tells the story of four Germans – two men and two women – who are all around 30 and work as „war extras“ for the U.S. Army at a combat training center in the Bavarian forest. For a few weeks, they play-act at being Arabian terrorists and simulate worst-case scenarios, on German territory. What reasons and motivations did the four protagonists have for their decision to work for the U.S. Army? How did it change their lives? Can you be for peace and yet work for war? These discrepancies between thoughts and actions form an essential part of the film.

Heroes at Work

Champion trainer Ulli Wegner (65) is from the former GDR. He was raised with discipline and order, and his boxers call him 'The General.' He trains up to 15 athletes in different weight classes at any one time, but only one world champion: Armenian middle-weight boxer Arthur Abraham (27). 'King Arthur' has a killer punch. He achieved rapid success but never really learned discipline. The coach almost despairs of him because he’s endowed with the most talent and the least punctuality. But Ulli Wegner and his begrudging world champion can only continue to win if they work together. Wegner makes his boxer treat him with polite formality, keeps him at a distance to maintain his authority, and repeatedly tries to strike him where it hurts to provoke him to new heights of performance. In the fourth round of his last fight Arthur was badly hurt but boxed on, fought round after round, and won. And his coach let it happen, not breaking off the fight so the world champion could keep his title. It was a risk for the legendary trainer, for his reputation and his image. The sportsman became a hero because his trainer had faith in him. In his strength, his fighting spirit. It's what binds them together. After his legendary fight, Arthur Abraham had to take a long break. The media were falling over themselves, and talk shows invited him on because now he was someone special. The King let his hair down. Four months later the next fight approaches. But Abraham is out of shape and far from being able to fulfill any expectations. He is eight kilos overweight and has fallen behind in his training group. It rests on his coach to restore the athlete to something the world wants to see out there in the boxing ring: an invincible king, a hero. The pressure also weighs heavily on Wegner.Four weeks before the fight and nerves are frayed. 'You can't possibly win like this,' the trainer barks mercilessly at his charge as he spars. During the lactate test he nearly despairs. Can the sportsman make a comeback or was there more broken in the last fight than a couple of bones?

Ice Blossoms

ICE BLOSSOMS is a socialspot, which was produced at the German Film and Television Academy dffb Berlin in 2008 within the framework of the „Ballhaus-Project“, a campaign for climate protection of Michael Ballhaus. A small girl is marveling at ice blossoms on a window of a chalet. Crystals, reminding of flowers, landscapes. Far away the sound of laughing children can be heard. The girl’s breath steams up the window, a small drop runs down, melting the ice blossoms. Someone calls the girls name – the magical moment is over. She takes a last glance at the ice blossoms and starts running back to the other children, who are cheerfully playing in the snow, surrounded by a breathtaking alpine scenery.

Glare

Thorsten and Katja are two drifters who both search for fleeting moments of happiness in the anonymity of Berlin’s nightlife. The moment they run into each other, it is clear, that two stray dogs have met in their very own territory. For one long weekend they aimlessly drift through the city, do drugs, sniff at and revolve each other and play childish games.

Sooner or Later

Nora is fourteen and lives with her parents in a quiet Berlin suburb. She is a romantic introvert who spends her day retreated into her own enchanted dreamworld. Her parents, Anette and Uwe, are busy trying to handle reality; both are wrestling with unrealised hopes and dreams along with the added troubles caused by Anette's return to her studies and Uwe's struggling business. When Thomas, a former lover of Anette's and his family move in next door, the already fragile foundations of Nora's family are rocked. Thomas, good looking and charming, is a failed actor and mountaineer. Nora immediately falls for the sensitive man. He represents everything her father lacks: savoir-vivre, vitality, worldliness and strength. Uwe can hardly bear how his former archrival now attracts all the attention with his "laissez-faire" charm and his larger-than-life stories. While Anette succumbs to an affair with a fellow student and Uwe breaks ties with his business partner, Nora begins projecting her desires onto the charming neighbour. Things come to a head between Uwe and Thomas at a dinner party. The veneer of family bliss is under threat and Nora understands that maybe her wistful desires aren't compatible with reality.
