The Other Side of Istanbul

“The Other Side of Istanbul” offers never-before-seen insight into the diversity of the gay experience in Turkey and the difficulties of homosexual self-discovery in a predominately homophobic society where “other” sexual orientations are hidden, repressed, or met with hostility. The film, the latest documentary from director Döndü Kilic, explores how the members of Turkey’s LGBT community defend their rights more confidently as the accessibility of information via new media expands, as they adopt more Western lifestyles and attitudes, and as the debate over Turkish admission to the European Union grows fiercer. Much like us, the world grows smaller each and every day for the Turkish men encountered in this film, but unfortunately, unlike many of us, each of these men must live in a land where some fear change and will stop at nothing to keep things the way they are. Istanbul is a city of stories, just when you think you know them all, you get a glimpse of “The Other Side of Istanbul.”.

Between Heaven And Earth

Eigentlich sind Salina und Albert ganz normale Berliner Jugendliche. Eigentlich. Actually Salina and Albert are pretty normal teenagers living in Berlin. But what makes a difference between them and others is not only the fact, that their childhood friends and relatives are not alive anymore and that they had to flee their home country, uncertain, when they will see it again - and if at all. What makes a difference are the dreams. How can you dream of the future, if you don´t even know what tomorrow will bring. It is seven years ago, that the family S. escaped from the war in their country Chechnia to come to Germany. Seven years of uncertainty, seven years of hope to be accepted as political refugees and to get a permission to stay, that would make it possible to start working again and to finally built up a normal life. During the two years this film accompanies the life of the family, it shows what it means, to fill your days with nothing but waiting and how difficult it is to not loose hope between metropolitain life and muslim religion, between great dreams and tough reality of everyday life.
